Painted in 1994, when I was, indeed learning to ride. This oil on panel paints from deep in my soul’s greatest fear - the rearing mount. All those letters? Dressage markers that I was attempting to understand and memorize. Somehow I learned to manage the fear, mainly out of self preservation because the horse could feel everything I was thinking. Have a terrific weekend.

"Ode To Killian" by C. Twomey
Killian’s Red was my first horse, and what a thoroughbred he was. I painted this portrait in 2007 to capture his vitality and sassiness. He was as green as I was, but we trained each other over the next 18 years. Flaxen mane and tail against a gleaming chestnut coat, he is greatly missed on this anniversary day. This is oil on canvas, and is sold.
“Resilient Ram” A 22 X 30” Contemporary Fresco on Aquabord.
VAA Art100 International Award Winner by C. Twomey
“Resilient Ram” by Catherine Twomey has been selected as a winner in the VAA Art100 International Exhibition. The Visual Artists Association, London curated approximately 1000 entries to 100 finalists, including this piece. Part of the "Tar Heel" Exhibition at the Upmarket Gallery in Asheville, through June 2025. Reflective of the strength and resiliency of Asheville following Hurricane Helene in September, 2025.
The ram symbol is associated with a multitude of meanings, often representing strength, courage, and vitality. It's also linked to leadership, determination, and even fertility. The ram's horns, in particular, are often seen as a symbol of power and aggression.
This original piece is pigments painted on Aquabord. It is archival, requires no glass, is varnished and ready to hang in a birchwood surround. For additional information, visit: https://www.catherinetwomey.com/new-products/resilient-ram-contemporary-fresco-22-x-30

“Beaver Skull, Winter Light”, 9/5 X 9/5” Contemporary fresco. Having visited this favored beaver skull before, this time I used a new medium (watercolor), new board (Aquabord) and winter light. For whatever reason, this time the beaver's smile became more apparent. I have a feeling she will be painted again. Framed in a beautiful handmade burlwood frame, ready to hang.

Found a beautiful beaver skull in an antique shop in Cleveland, Ohio. I just had to paint it. There was life behind the empty eyes and frightening teeth. Even the cast shadow had a mystery to it that begged to be rendered.
It was interesting to be able to balance the skull so it was freestanding. Going to keep going with this anatomical work for a while; it's very satisfying.
The original is oil on 8" X 6" archival linen board. This is how the painting would look framed:

It was such a pleasure to stare at it for hours, and I enjoy the menacing, almost alive look to it as I continue to paint. I don't feel it's finished yet, but I wanted it out there - released, ready to chew down a tree.
Don't know if I'm going to sell this yet. I'm definitely going to continue this series; it brought so much pleasure and intensity. There's a deer and horse skull waiting.
