Indian Horsehair Vase & Lemon; A First Meeting
Original oil on linen panel, 5 X 7", for sale. Contact at 262-893-4126.

This is an oil of a cherished American Indian made horsehair vase, painted with a fresh slice of lemon. This is the official documentation of their first meeting; an auspicious meeting in Sedona, Arizona where I spent a joyous week painting with fellow artists.

The kind of organic work I want to continue once settled in California.

African Shell and Rock, In Conversation

Just posted this:

African Shell and Rock, In Conversation
African Shell and Rock, In Conversation

To Fine Art America, where prints of it up to 43 X 60" can be purchased. Found this wonderful Sedona red rock outside the studio one day, the same day I found this smooth, pearlescent African shell in a mystical mysterious Sedona-type shop.

Moving to California on Saturday. No really, I am. To Danville, which is in the East Bay of San Francisco. I am so looking forward to painting new landscapes, people, horses and whatever else crosses my path. We're going to take two weeks to get there, seeing all kinds of friends along the way in Cleveland, Chicago, Montana and finally San Fran. Time for a good, good change.

BTW, the original is for sale. Email or give me a call at 262-893-4126 & we'll talk.

ARTISTS ALERT!!! Call for Copyright Action!!!!

Fellow artists,

The 1976 Copyright Act is being written, and NOT for the good of artist's rights. It is critical that all artists who want and need their revenue streams, royalties and indeed, the creative ownership of their own work to remain intact, then your input is needed immediately

Once the law is rewritten, then the opportunity to make a difference is lost.

Until Thursday, July 23, 2015, you may contact the Copyright Office and submit your opinion. If you want to know the background about this complex but very important issue, then you will find an in-depth interview on youtube. The interview is titled:

"Everything You Know About Copyright Is About To Change - Brad Holland"

Here is the LINK.

In 2008 over 100 artists from all walks of life spent our own time, money and energy to go to Washington DC. We rallied thousands of artists to send in their work samples, letters, etc. and we went to the offices (and often met with) every Senator and member of the House of Representatives to let them know what we expected from them.

We have lawyers (often pro bono) and have hired lobbyists to represent artist's rights. The bill died from the pressure put on artists from across the country.

It is time to fight for our rights again.

Thank you.

Working BIG on this ancient Virginia White Oak

Viginia White Oak, 12 X 24", oil on gessoed birch

Gosh am I having a good time lately. I am loving finally getting to paint this rather famous white oak tree in Earlysville, VA. I pass it almost daily and it's really gotten to me over the years. I only paint what I have great fondness for, and this is one of those things. Rumor has it it's well over 200 years old, and that Thomas Jefferson noted it when he'd pass it on the way to visit James Madison's home at Montpelier

I've learned that what's really unique about this particular species of oak is the tulip-shaped trunk. It's very wide at the base and narrows rather quickly, hence the "tulip shape." I hope it lives forever.

I spent a lovely morning photographing and sketching it and have been just itching to do this. This is the first LARGE (for me) painting I've done in years, and it's a welcome change. Going to keep going on this about 3/4 finished piece to finish before I hit the road for California then New York City next week.

 Virginia Country Store

This original, custom framed oil painting by internationally award-winning artist
Catherine Twomey speaks to the nostalgia of warm summer days. Painted en plein air
(outside, on site), it is of a Virginia General Store. It oozes the heat and light of a
late summer afternoon, where the old pumps sit waiting for their next customer along the shadowed country road.

I painted this building because it has become an old friend; I pass it almost daily. It's
design and classic beauty were obvious. I spent hours painting it as the day waned,
but loved every minute.

On archival linen board, the size of the painting is 5 X 7", with the frame it comes to
9.5 X 11". The frame is custom made by King of Frames (California) and is a rich
brown wood with a gold lining and very well made, ready to hand. It sets the painting
off beautifully and will enhance any setting.

The colors, texture, contrasts of light and shadow evoke the emotions of the 1940's,
when this store was built. It is a southern classic still serving a contemporary clientele
with dignity and charm.

This 8 X 10" on archival board oil painting is from a series, the first of which won the nationally acclaimed "ArtInPlace" competition and was reproduced into a 12 X 24' mural along a busy highway in Charlottesville, VA. Can't get enough of the Blue Ridge mountains, especially in the fall. This view is from Skyline Drive, looking towards the east around sunset in the fall. I've painted it four times now, and that's still not enough! This particular painting is more luminous than previous works, as the technique evolves.

This auction is ending tonight, so please click here to place your bid.

I collect antique moonshine jugs, and loved the shape, coloring and stenciled letters of the maker on the jug. The pear I chose especially to go with the pottery, which I thought gave it a run for the money in terms of fabulous color.

This is an original oil painting, done alla prima (in one sitting - a long day!). The painting is on archival board and is unframed, 6 X 8".

Helping The Neighbors

Photo of Wakefield Farm

If you're a horse person and you're in a place that snows, then you know how tough winter is. If you're a neighbor and you reach out to know those in your neighborhood, then you know how rewarding that can be. The last couple of weeks a neighborly crisis, the snow and reaping the rewards have merged.
I live next to a 35 acre horse farm, and I've come to know the people who run it as well as ride there. Three weeks ago my trainer was on a flighty horse who spooked, then decided to turn into a rodeo horse. My trainer flew six or so feet in the air as the mare leaped, then somehow she landed full force upright. In an instant, her heel, lower leg/tibia and kneecap were shattered and/or displaced. Two surgeries later, she's now recovering and will be for months.
In the meantime, 20+ horses need care and their caretaker is broken in bed. As much as I can, I've headed over to knock the ice out of frozen water buckets, muck stalls, and shuffle the horses back and forth to their pastures. I haven't been painting as much as I'd like, but that has to wait.
Lots of other neighbors and friends have stepped up and helped. Unfortunately, a few conspicuous potential helpers have not stepped up. At all. Here in the South, religion oozes through some. I've noticed they're often the ones who judge the hardest and help the least.
Spring will come. We'll forget how hard these weeks are and cherish how the hard times brought us together. To know how to appreciate this is a gift without strings. Or judgements.
