It's that time of year when I can't ride. Aside from the cold and snow, I have to have foot surgery so riding is out of the question. I was one of those kids who loved horses from the moment I could breath.
So if I can't ride right now, I'm going to paint them. I've spent a lot of time at Temple Farms in Wadsworth, IL. When Lippizans were almost wiped out in World War II, a herd was moved to the U.S. and this is where they now live, reproduce and perform. The riders are fantastic, the horses breathtaking in their airs-above-the-ground. This is a portrait from a Sunday performance.
"Blue Ridge Sheep Clouds" Sold, by C. Twomey
Thank you to the collector of this piece, painted live along Skyline Drive in the Piedmont Area of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in Shenandoah National Park. Made me feel like an angel as the warm summer breezes overcame my easel and me. I loved the patterns; the repetition of shapes and most of all, the color of these mountains. See the sheep cloud to the upper right? My eye finally found him after I thought I was done, but he's welcome to stay.

“Thomas Jefferson's White Oak Tree On The Way To James Madison's For Afternoon Tea” sold to a collector, with much appreciation from the artist! This gorgeous white tulip tree is just west of Rt. 29 in Charlottesville, VA. It’s a stunning, old beauty that I well imagined Jefferson admiring on the way to Madison’s estate back in the day. The original is 12X24”, oil on gessoboard. For additional prints:

I’m missing summer right now - it’s about 20 degrees out, with a big wind - and this is one of my favorite summer places. Idyllic, yes, but puts a brain in a good place.

Just finished this piece after a visit to the Rochester area of Vermont. I wanted to capture the extraordinary contrast between the changing leaves and turbulent skies. The winters can be brutal there, but their falls are spectacular.

Opening Friday, Oct. 5!
SO happy to report that my two pieces were saved from Hurricane Florence by the wonderful folks at https://www.cravenarts.org/
As the storm approaching, the curator and helpers took the show down and stored it in a bank vault. The town, New Berlin, was swamped with water but the works were safe, secure and dry! Cannot thank the people at cravenarts.org enough.
The gallery opening will be Friday, Oct. 5 and these pieces are available then! Thanks for your interest, hope you can participate.
Be Safe; What Has Florence Wrought?
Unfortunately the fate of these two pieces is unknown. My gallery opening was to be Friday, Sept. 14 in New Bern, North Carolina. This town was severely impacted by Hurricane Florence, as was, I’m pretty sure, the gallery, which was downtown. Here’s hoping for the best for the residents and my fellow artists! And if you see them floating by, please give me a ring…..
Plein Air "Point Reyes, CA, Drake Beach Estuary" on Offer
This was my first trip to the astounding Point Reyes National Seashore preserve, about 1.5 hours north of San Francisco. I hiked all over the area, and painted this sitting on a hill looking towards the cliffs, watching as the midday tide began to waft in. The gulls and seals were talking to me for the several hours while I painted.
This original, plein air watercolor is for sale. It is on heavyweight Arches Hot Press paper, and is about 13"X 9" and is unframed.
Bank of the Arts Competition Acceptance!
Pleased to announce this piece has been accepted into the national juried show, "Bank of the Arts." Almost 600 works were entered, only a few over 100 were accepted.
About the painting: That moment when you sense a nasty storm about to reach you, but you have no intention of moving. The electricity is in the air, there's no where to go, yet still you can't move. This is an acrylic painting, 12X12", original with pouring and hand painting.
"Grandfather Mountain Adoration" Work Completed!
There is something so satisfying about working with someone who has commissioned your work. The gift of having their trust to complete a vision is priceless. This work began with a trip up the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Grandfather Mountain area. I hiked extensively, capturing reference photos and a good sense of what the mountain was about. Just this morning, the commissioner commented:
It’s beautiful and we love it! It’s going to look great in our living room.
Thank you so much.
Grateful, thrilled and touched by the whole process.
"Grandfather Mountain Adoration" Work In Progress Coming Along
This work is moving along! It is so thoroughly enjoyable to see the vision come alive, and the paint is cooperating. Being almost August in North Carolina, however, it takes a while to dry. In this image the sun has not yet been rendered - the mountain layers will "tell" me how to show it. So grateful for this commission and support.
