Description

• Do you know what delamination is, and how to prevent it in your paintings?

• Do you know which oil colors work best in the underlayers, and which work best on the finishing layers?

• Learn why zinc oxide in most titanium white oil paints set your paintings up for shorter lifespans, while learning which brands are zinc free.

And that’s just the start!

Learn how to use oil paints, solvent-free, in this very hands-on, let’s get into it workshop. This half-day course is designed to clarify and simplify the oil painting process while you gain an understanding of how to work archivally - so your works will last for generations. It will explore the following: palettes, painting surfaces, tools, paints, mediums, shape, value, color, form and techniques. Before we get into actually painting objects, you’ll get to experiment with mixing paints cleanly, a variety of brush shapes and sizes, how to create an underpainting, types of strokes, etc. We will work directly from a simple still life of both manmade and natural objects, focusing on light and creating three dimensional form. We’ll investigate form, color and color mixing, edges and how to use them as well as the beauty of warm and cool colors. Techniques will include underpainting, massing large shapes, fat over lean, glazing, blending, impasto and dry brush, practiced while using a variety of brush shapes and pressures. All of the methods taught are based on sound scientific research, so no matter whether you’re a still life, plein air, portrait or any type of painter, the principles apply to help you create your best, most stable work - all without toxic fumes. There will be short demos and participant interactions - this workshop is meant to get you started correctly and rapidly in the beautiful and challenging medium of oils.
