Painting In Vermont During Leaf and Stick Season

Fall along Saw Mill Hill Road; Rochester, Vermont

Fall along Saw Mill Hill Road; Rochester, Vermont

It’s a wonderful time to get out into nature and hike. I shot the above image of my dog Moxie on a glorious fall day, and plan to start a painting tomorrow fueled by the beauty of Vermont.

Speaking of hiking, I recommend a new, well researched book on hiking by Jenny Hobby. It's a 5,000 word 'Ultimate Beginners Guide to Hiking' book that would be helpful for anyone looking to get started.

Feel free to check it out here: https://hobbyhelp.com/hiking/

"Appearently So" A Trio of Boscs, Original Oil by C. Twomey

"Appearently So" by C. Twomey, 9 X 12" original oil

"Appearently So" by C. Twomey, 9 X 12" original oil

It's that time of year, and I found this trio of Bosc pears at the local grocery and had to paint them. I loved the spots, and the orangish glow throughout. The paint is lush; the colors strong and beautifully, carefully layered. This is an original oil, sized 12'W X 9"H. It is painted on archival linen from RayMar.

My painting process is to first layer in a warm color, like burnt sienna, onto white linen canvas. With that thin layer still wet, I wipe out the lightest areas, which later provides luminosity and usually is enough to define the shapes. Next, I apply the lightest and then darkest areas, which helps to establish the values and colors. Finally middle tones and more detailed areas are applied, always looking to harmonize the colors, refine the drawing and focus on the center of interest.

The painting has been varnished and will be carefully packaged by me. Please note that the painting is not framed.

BREAKING NEWS! I’ve just been notified that three of my paintings have been accepted for the highly competitive Randy Highbee 6X6 Squared exhibition in Los Angeles, CA. I'm very honored and excited to participate in this show featuring top nationwide artists.

About Me

I've been painting since 2008. Up until then, I honed my drawing and painting skills by practicing as a Certified Medical Illustrator. My blogs have been viewed by over 70,000 people worldwide, and I have over 2,000 followers on Facebook on Catherine Twomey Art.

I proud and happy to write that I've just been notified that three of my paintings have been accepted for the highly competitive Randy Highbee 6X6 Squared exhibition in Los Angeles, CA. I'm very honored and excited to participate in this show featuring top nationwide artists.

My paintings are of a variety of subjects and sizes, ranging from 4 X5" up to 18 X 24" or greater. Each painting is carefully considered, sometimes in a series or in a similar approach to the subject matter. What's most important is that each painting is defined by the moment it is created. Whether it reflects a mood, or a moment, or something so beautiful it had to be painted; my soul goes into each stroke, color choice, composition and execution. Having studied Japanese Art for my Master's Thesis, I instinctively incorporate the Japanese respect for careful presentation and finishing, personally varnishing and packaging the work

My artwork has been featured at the world renowned TED (Technology, Education and Design) conference (TED MED in San Diego, on huge high definition screens throughout the exhibition center).

Notes

I accept Paypal payments. This painting is currently drying, so it won't be shipped for about three weeks. I personally varnish, wrap and ship the painting to ensure a successful delivery.

"East Fall Blue Ridge No. 4" oil on linen board, C. Twomey

Please Click HERE to view the AUCTION!
This 8 X 10" on archival board oil painting is from a series, the first of which won the nationally acclaimed "ArtInPlace" competition and was reproduced into a 12 X 24' mural along a busy highway in Charlottesville, VA. Can't get enough of the Blue Ridge mountains, especially in the fall. This view is from Skyline Drive, looking towards the east around sunset in the fall. I've painted it four times now, and that's still not enough! This particular painting is more luminous than previous works, as the technique evolves.

"Southern Homestead" Signed Landscape Oil by Twomey, Custom Framed, Listed

original oil Catherine Twomey
"Southern Homestead No. 1" C. Twomey, 8 X 10", oil

Recalling mid-century (or earlier) southern hospitality and charm, this original oil painting by C. Twomey captures the delightful warmth of an original homestead on an early fall day in Virginia. The classic porch front architecture, the tin roof, the welcoming rocking chairs - these details transport the viewer to another time, a simpler place. It's about 3 miles from my home.

This oil on archival linen board is custom framed in a stunning, weathered gold "floater" frame, giving the illusion of floating in space and depth. The oil is 8 X 10"H. The frame is 11.5 X 13.5"H and 1.75" deep and ready to hang.

I've won many national and international awards for my artwork, and am a published author which means I have no excuse for bad writing or editing. Mea culpa. I'm not nearly as good a writer as my brother Steve, who won a Pulitzer Prize and has some books in the works. I do, however, try.

There have been great influencers throughout my life. My mother, who raised three children alone on a schoolteacher's salary. My brother Steve, who won a Pulitzer Prize and has some books in the pipeline. My sister Ann, who is the good child. Cousin Julia Sweeney from Saturday Night Live and many books, one-woman shows and screenplays. My sister-in-law Kathleen Carroll runs the editorial side of the Associated Press, and is Chairperson of the Pulitzer Prize Award Board. All of these influencers have accomplished amazing things despite great adversity.

I have studied with some of the best artistic and scientific minds in the world: fellow medical illustrators. Leonardo da Vinci is considered the first medical illustrator, and his knowledge, technical abilities and deep curiosity are benchmarks for the field. As a Board Certified Medical Illustrator, I have had the privilege to know and learn directly from some of the most extraordinarily talented, smart and influential visionaries living today.

"East Fall Blue Ridge 2" Twomey Painting Auction

The Dailypaintworks Auction for the following painting ends soon! Take a moment to bid on this original oil painting:

East Fall Blue Ridge 2

I perched along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park looking to the west, towards theShenandoah Valley. Had my paints, easel and an outrageously gorgeous day to capture the fall colors. I loved the layers of mountains dissipating in the distance. And the colors! The blues next to the oranges - irresistible. This took longer than expected, I think because I didn't want the day to end.

Original oil, 6 X 4" on archival linen board, unframed.

Just wanted to add a link to this post to a wonderful new guide written by Janice Rogers of Your RV Lifestyle:  https://www.your-rv-lifestyle.com/best-things-to-do-in-virginia.html

It's well worth your time for a look if you're planning a visit to the beautiful state of Virginia!

Commissioned Oil Painting

Just finished this commission. What a joy it was to paint. You get the last vestiges of fall in the bright orange maple leaves and bare branches. I had to do the right hand background three times before I was happy with it. Another lesson in "Less is More."

It's hard to imagine living in a place so beautiful, so ready to pull you in. This is an 8" X 10" on linen panel in a floater frame. The recipient was "Touched and delighted." Thank you!

Twomey's Blue Ridge Blue Road

Off of Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, there’s a steep but worth it trail. I hiked up there with my paints and easel to find lots of happy peeps taking in the outrageously beautiful fall view. That blue road is Skyline Drive meandering through the ridges. What a day. Hawksbill Mountain has an elevation of 4,050 feet. The summit of Hawksbill Mountain is the highest point in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia.
