Having just returned from a workshop in Sedona, Arizona, I immediately started a painting that would highlight what I'd learned. The terrific instructor was Abbey Ryan. She was prepared, patient and thorough throughout the workshop, which lasted one week. We even were located very close to a 20,000 acre unconfined wildfire, but we continued undaunted.

What was most informative about the workshop was learning that the skills I'd developed over the last thirty years as a medical illustrator translate over to oil painting. What a joy to be able to control the paint, using layering and coloring to control the emotion and focus of the painting. Abbey helped me a great deal with how to use and hold the brush as well as how to logically work my way through a painting to achieve what I intended.

There is much to be said for devoting myself completely to art for a set amount of intensive time. I was surrounded by fellow artists all looking for inspiration and progress, and the support we willed to each other was amazing.

Tomorrow, June 10, this original oil will be offered for sale at auction.

Jefferson Cup With Tomato And Sedona Rocks

Just painted this in Sedona, Arizona while a 20,000 acre wildfire burned nine miles down the road. These are genuine red rock bricks, and they literally glowed in the natural light. I'm in a still life mood lately - it's been just too hot out - and this beautiful reflecting cup is a reproduction of one Thomas Jefferson commissioned for his home in Virginia, Monticello. The Loch Ness monsterish tomato stem reflected in the cup really grabbed me.

This original oil painting, 7 X 5", will be offered at auction starting tomorrow. The painting is unframed, but if you frame it it will look like the image below.

The good news is the fire burned no structures and is almost contained. The bad news is the future for similar fires and heat in Sedona is very real, and quite frightening. The cause? Too many people (with their body heat), oh, yes - and global warming. Felt very real while I was there.

First local plein air of the season, I painted this last Monday at the gorgeous Wakefield Farm. The farm is in my back yard and houses 25 horses. It was built in 1781 and has many of the original structures, including this shed. 

I was taken by the beautiful aging grays of the shed's walls against the brilliant pinks, white and apricots of the flowering dogwoods. What a sight! As I painted at least five people came over for pleasant chats and comments. A day that will not soon be forgotten.

"Deer Skull With Aura", Sold

Deer Skull With Aura

The dogs and I were hiking through the woods - which can be pretty wild here in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Moxie the red dog joyfully brought me this magical find. I cleaned it in bleach and set it up to paint. Lo and behold, it more than spoke to me thru the oils. I spent a long, long time on it - medical illustrator that I was - exploring the sutures, eye sockets, foramen, orifices and so on; so it began to take on a new, mystical life. Hence, the slight aura emanating from the top. It's a straight-on expression of curiosity and structure that seeped into my soul.

The Latin name for white tailed deer is odocoileus virginianus. Quite a mouthful. I prefer Deer Skull With Aura. 

The second I showed this to a friend, he bought it. I painted the majority of this at the end of the winter, feeling blue and out of sorts. It's one of the pieces that's either a love or a hate. It's going into the hands of someone who will love it.

Daffodils Coming and Going, Catherine Twomey 8 X 6" oil on archival linen board

These daffodils are from my garden, and after the harsh winter were some of the first bulbs to bloom. Welcome they were! The darker yellow one was fresh the first day, but kept changing position as it aged, so I solved that by softening the petals and giving them a whimsical flightiness. I cherish the vase; it's art deco elegance compliments everything it meets.

I perched along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park looking to the west, towards theShenandoah Valley. Had my paints, easel and an outrageously gorgeous day to capture the fall colors. I loved the layers of mountains dissipating in the distance. And the colors! The blues next to the oranges - irresistible. This took longer than expected, I think because I didn't want the day to end.

Away From The Herd

Taking a brief break from the herd. I'll be back mid April. In the meantime, please enjoy this congenial zebra herd I met in South Africa last June. 

And for the record: the house is being guarded by professional attack dogs and an armed angry veteran. What a world.

Found a beautiful beaver skull in an antique shop in Cleveland, Ohio. I just had to paint it. There was life behind the empty eyes and frightening teeth. Even the cast shadow had a mystery to it that begged to be rendered. 

It was interesting to be able to balance the skull so it was freestanding. Going to keep going with this anatomical work for a while; it's very satisfying.

Found a beautiful beaver skull in an antique shop in Cleveland, Ohio. I just had to paint it. There was life behind the empty eyes and frightening teeth. Even the cast shadow had a mystery to it that begged to be rendered. 

It was interesting to be able to balance the skull so it was freestanding. Going to keep going with this anatomical work for a while; it's very satisfying.

The way the sun hit this hillside as it raced to the horizon is what drew my eye. Down below, a old shanty town was lost in the shadows. The rusted roofs were such a contrast against the strong hillside design - I had to paint it. There were a couple of hours to get it down, but the sun was quick to depart and I had to fight not to overwork it. It was a goal reached.

Advance Mills was an old mill town about two miles from my home. The road, Advance Mills, is one of my favorites - twisty, turny, on a ridge - the views along it are so spectacular you really have to focus to stay on it. We looked at buying some of this land, so I spent a lot of time walking it and loved catching it at sunset. You can see why. I had to work fast. The woods behind were already dripped in shadow, with sky holes poking thru. What a glorious day.

Found this beautiful skull in an antique shop in Cleveland, Ohio. I loved that I could just hold it in my hand and turn it every which way.

It was such a pleasure to stare at it for hours, and I enjoy the menacing, almost alive look to it as I continue to paint. I don't feel it's finished yet, but I wanted it out there - released, ready to chew down a tree.

Don't know if I'm going to sell this yet. I'm definitely going to continue this series; it brought so much pleasure and intensity. There's a deer and horse skull waiting.

Process

This was one of those days when you can feel the ions in the air. Was it dangerous to start painting this enormous, approaching storm? Probably not; but I was in the moment and it was dramatic. This was painted on a beach near Tampa, Florida. The storm stayed out to sea, thankfully. 

The contrasts and colors were simply incredible. I had to hurry up not to get wet. Every time I look at this, I'm taken back to that warm tropical air, the flashing lightening and the sense of impending chaos.
