Been painting up a storm over the last three weeks - all outside, plein air. Trying some new paints, a mix of oils and Open Acrylics, so I’m getting there and beginning to understand the opacity and drying times. I stood next to the Bridge Tender Bar where 60’s Jimmy Buffet music played and the local guys kept asking me if I was painting them. A good day. 12X12” on archival board.
"Two Palms, Gulf Coast" Original Plein Air Painting
I wish I knew enough about palms to guess how old these two are. They’ve (obviously) bent in the wind and are guarding the inlet into Sarasota Bay. The Bay, I recently learned, is only about four feet deep and full of grasslands and wildlife.
"Coquina Beach, Two Palms" by C. Twomey, January 2019
There is something about these two palms that I find irresistible. The day was warm, about 75, and as I painted many encouraging and kind people stopped by to watch. Makes me think there is hope for humanity! While I was there a fisherman caught a Man ‘O Ray in his net, which he returned to the sea. I love the contrast between the decaying manmade cement wall and all of the ocean’s organics.
2018's Painting Retrospective, C. Twomey
A year of joyful art making, experimentation and an exciting new direction. Thank you to the supporters, collectors, encouragers and laugh-makers who inspired me along the way! Happy Holidays and a 2019 with less drama and more truth-telling.
WIP Work In Progress: "Blue Mountain Night" by C. Twomey
There’s something strangely satisfying about starting a painting with a graduated tint. This is going to be the Blue Ridge Mountains as night descends on Asheville. It’s 12X16” on Canson board.
"Lippizan Levade 1.0" Original Art by C. Twomey
To me, a lifelong lover of animals and horses, there is nothing more glorious then a horse freely moving the way nature meant them to move. Just pull over the next time you pass by a pasture and watch them for a while. That's how I saw this brilliant young stallion, playing next to a field of mares, elevating himself almost above the ground, with joy.
As lippizan horses age, they often become white and their natural movements are channeled in classical riding schools into astounding movements and performances. But me, I like them free. Although I do like riding the movements, when my poor foot doesn't have to have surgery (in the spring).
Mixed media, 12X16" on Canson canvas board, unframed.
"Blue Ridge Sheep Clouds" Sold, by C. Twomey
Thank you to the collector of this piece, painted live along Skyline Drive in the Piedmont Area of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in Shenandoah National Park. Made me feel like an angel as the warm summer breezes overcame my easel and me. I loved the patterns; the repetition of shapes and most of all, the color of these mountains. See the sheep cloud to the upper right? My eye finally found him after I thought I was done, but he's welcome to stay.

Blue Ridge Vineyards 2.0
I’m missing summer right now - it’s about 20 degrees out, with a big wind - and this is one of my favorite summer places. Idyllic, yes, but puts a brain in a good place.

Painting In Vermont During Leaf and Stick Season
It’s a wonderful time to get out into nature and hike. I shot the above image of my dog Moxie on a glorious fall day, and plan to start a painting tomorrow fueled by the beauty of Vermont.
Speaking of hiking, I recommend a new, well researched book on hiking by Jenny Hobby. It's a 5,000 word 'Ultimate Beginners Guide to Hiking' book that would be helpful for anyone looking to get started.
Feel free to check it out here: https://hobbyhelp.com/hiking/
Thanks for your interest!
Tomales Bay Trail, Point Reyes, CA Plein Air
I sat above the ocean for about three hours, after having hiked from the last road towards the tip of Tomales Trail. While sitting here painting, a coyote slid by, his eye on me the entire time. I could hear the waves lapping against the shore as the tide came in. The pattern of the cliffs was of particular interest and beauty. This painting is for sale. it is about 11X7", unframed and is a watercolor.
Fireflies: Study of fireflies in June
The fireflies migrate to the tops of the oaks after about 9:00 pm. I wish I knew what they were planning. It's been humid, hot and the days filled with downpours, one after the other. Maybe they're trying to escape the earth? 4X6" on archival canvas board.
New Series: Manifesto
This earth series is deeply inspired by a respect and love for all things in nature. I live in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina and love to hike through the mountains. Their inspiration is what drives this series, as well as concern for the environment. It's interesting to imagine what's below the mountains; the geology, the layers, the rock striations.
This painting is 12 X 16" Canson canvas on board. It is unframed. This is acrylic including a brilliant metallic gold.

Blue Ridge Swirl
Working on a new series, this piece was influenced by the Blue Ridge Mountains around Asheville NC. The acrylic pour technique is challenging but very interesting to see what will happen with the colors.
