Recalling mid-century (or earlier) southern hospitality and charm, this original oil painting by Catherine Twomey captures the delightful warmth of an original homestead on an early fall day in Virginia. The classic porch front architecture, the tin roof, the welcoming rocking chairs - these details transport the viewer to another time, a simpler place.

Why paint? "Taylor Jug & Pear" oil by Twomey

There's so much behind every painting that, until now, hasn't been said. There has to be an emotional connection to what I'm going to spend time painting. In this piece, it's the beauty of the old, worn jug; so obviously prized by it's makers and now by me. Then, there's the very physical act of creating: which objects? What are the relationships between the objects? What kind of light? How, how do I simplify yet suggest volume and form? The best of all? How wonderful it feels to start to shape something out of the air, to mix the colors until they're just right, and find meaning in the final result. I was there. I touched that surface. I loved those things.

I've been trying to get up to speed on what blogging is, and I've decided much of it is a guess. You have to waddle through all of the self-proclaimed experts and take a nugget here, a nugget there, to come to a semblance of a conclusion. It's maddening! But maybe that's the challenge. New phrase: In The Old Days (ITOD) it was all laid out and clear: galleries, publishers, agents, collectors. Not any more. I hope to blog my successes and failures as this evolves.

Driving by this classic old service station daily, I'm reminded of the era it was built and all the people who've passed through that door. It's still in service today and at lunchtime is jammed with contractors looking for deli sandwiches and a fill up.

Buck Mountain Vineyard No.1

This original oil painting, "Buck Mountain Vineyard No.2" will be available for sale on September 13th and 20th at the Arts Rivanna Tour, in and around Earlysville, VA. It is 6 X 6", and is framed in a beautiful handmade frame.

I was driving down Buck Mountain Rd., about 2 miles from where I live, and came around a curve to this unforgettable site. There wasn't much room for painting, but I got it done and can't help revisiting the moment every time I paint it. Vineyards are popping up all over here, and they bring endless painting possibilities.

"Deer Skull With Aura", Sold

Deer Skull With Aura

The dogs and I were hiking through the woods - which can be pretty wild here in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Moxie the red dog joyfully brought me this magical find. I cleaned it in bleach and set it up to paint. Lo and behold, it more than spoke to me thru the oils. I spent a long, long time on it - medical illustrator that I was - exploring the sutures, eye sockets, foramen, orifices and so on; so it began to take on a new, mystical life. Hence, the slight aura emanating from the top. It's a straight-on expression of curiosity and structure that seeped into my soul.

The Latin name for white tailed deer is odocoileus virginianus. Quite a mouthful. I prefer Deer Skull With Aura. 

The second I showed this to a friend, he bought it. I painted the majority of this at the end of the winter, feeling blue and out of sorts. It's one of the pieces that's either a love or a hate. It's going into the hands of someone who will love it.

Daffodils Coming and Going, Catherine Twomey 8 X 6" oil on archival linen board

These daffodils are from my garden, and after the harsh winter were some of the first bulbs to bloom. Welcome they were! The darker yellow one was fresh the first day, but kept changing position as it aged, so I solved that by softening the petals and giving them a whimsical flightiness. I cherish the vase; it's art deco elegance compliments everything it meets.

I perched along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park looking to the west, towards the Shenandoah Valley. Had my paints, easel and an outrageously gorgeous day to capture the fall colors. I loved the layers of mountains dissipating in the distance. And the colors! The blues next to the oranges - irresistible. This took longer than expected, I think because I didn't want the day to end.

The way the sun hit this hillside as it raced to the horizon is what drew my eye. Down below, a old shanty town was lost in the shadows. The rusted roofs were such a contrast against the strong hillside design - I had to paint it. There were a couple of hours to get it down, but the sun was quick to depart and I had to fight not to overwork it. It was a goal reached.

Advance Mills was an old mill town about two miles from my home. The road, Advance Mills, is one of my favorites - twisty, turny, on a ridge - the views along it are so spectacular you really have to focus to stay on it. We looked at buying some of this land, so I spent a lot of time walking it and loved catching it at sunset. You can see why. I had to work fast. The woods behind were already dripped in shadow, with sky holes poking thru. What a glorious day.

Process

This was one of those days when you can feel the ions in the air. Was it dangerous to start painting this enormous, approaching storm? Probably not; but I was in the moment and it was dramatic. This was painted on a beach near Tampa, Florida. The storm stayed out to sea, thankfully. 

The contrasts and colors were simply incredible. I had to hurry up not to get wet. Every time I look at this, I'm taken back to that warm tropical air, the flashing lightening and the sense of impending chaos.

This work is 10 X 8" on archival canvas. It is unframed. This is how this painting would look framed:

As the sun climbed down thru the sky, I was on a bluff painting en plein air (live) as quickly as I could. This was my first trip in 30 years to Sedona, Arizona, but oh, was I glad to see such a sight. 

The rocks really are that color, the mist hangs over the valley and I only had about an hour or so to get my impressions down. I was surrounded by fellow artists, equally inspired, and we were so focused on nature's brief gift of a spectacular sunset. 

I'm heading back to Sedona in May, and can't wait to relive the other-worldly red rock offerings.
