My grandmother's silver platter holds this red pear and Jefferson Cup. I was intrigued by the reflections, especially by how many times the pear appeared; as if it couldn't let go.

I was driving down Buck Mountain Rd., about 2 miles from where I live, and came around a curve to this unforgettable site. There wasn't much room for painting, but I got it done and can't help revisiting the moment every time I paint it. Vineyards are popping up all over here, and they bring endless painting possibilities.

This original 5 X 7" oil painting is now at auction. Having just returned from a workshop in Sedona, Arizona, I immediately started a painting that would highlight what I'd learned. The terrific instructor was Abbey Ryan. She was prepared, patient and thorough throughout the workshop, which lasted one week. We even were located very close to a 20,000 acre unconfined wildfire, but we continued undaunted.
What was most informative about the workshop was learning that the skills I'd developed over the last thirty years as a medical illustrator translate over to oil painting. What a joy to be able to control the paint, using layering and coloring to control the emotion and focus of the painting. Abbey helped me a great deal with how to use and hold the brush as well as how to logically work my way through a painting to achieve what I intended.

The good news is the fire burned no structures and is almost contained. The bad news is the future for similar fires and heat in Sedona is very real, and quite frightening. The cause? Too many people (with their body heat), oh, yes - and global warming. Felt very real while I was there.

The dogs and I were hiking through the woods - which can be pretty wild here in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Moxie the red dog joyfully brought me this magical find. I cleaned it in bleach and set it up to paint. Lo and behold, it more than spoke to me thru the oils. I spent a long, long time on it - medical illustrator that I was - exploring the sutures, eye sockets, foramen, orifices and so on; so it began to take on a new, mystical life. Hence, the slight aura emanating from the top. It's a straight-on expression of curiosity and structure that seeped into my soul.
The Latin name for white tailed deer is odocoileus virginianus. Quite a mouthful. I prefer Deer Skull With Aura.
The second I showed this to a friend, he bought it. I painted the majority of this at the end of the winter, feeling blue and out of sorts. It's one of the pieces that's either a love or a hate. It's going into the hands of someone who will love it.

These daffodils are from my garden, and after the harsh winter were some of the first bulbs to bloom. Welcome they were! The darker yellow one was fresh the first day, but kept changing position as it aged, so I solved that by softening the petals and giving them a whimsical flightiness. I cherish the vase; it's art deco elegance compliments everything it meets.

I perched along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park looking to the west, towards theShenandoah Valley. Had my paints, easel and an outrageously gorgeous day to capture the fall colors. I loved the layers of mountains dissipating in the distance. And the colors! The blues next to the oranges - irresistible. This took longer than expected, I think because I didn't want the day to end.

It was such a pleasure to stare at it for hours, and I enjoy the menacing, almost alive look to it as I continue to paint. I don't feel it's finished yet, but I wanted it out there - released, ready to chew down a tree.
Don't know if I'm going to sell this yet. I'm definitely going to continue this series; it brought so much pleasure and intensity. There's a deer and horse skull waiting.

Process
This was one of those days when you can feel the ions in the air. Was it dangerous to start painting this enormous, approaching storm? Probably not; but I was in the moment and it was dramatic. This was painted on a beach near Tampa, Florida. The storm stayed out to sea, thankfully.
The contrasts and colors were simply incredible. I had to hurry up not to get wet. Every time I look at this, I'm taken back to that warm tropical air, the flashing lightening and the sense of impending chaos.
This work is 10 X 8" on archival canvas. It is unframed. This is how this painting would look framed:

The first in a barn series at the Bleak House Plantation in Earlysville, VA, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. At this nitial painting stage, I'm there to understand the correct structure, lighting and "mood" of the building. This barn has it all. It's imposing, to be sure, and as the sun was slowly heading down, the barn's history ebbed forth.
I'm often at heightened state of, well - anxiety - at this stage. There is only so much time to get things painted correctly, and especially settle on the shadow's shapes. If you can imagine, what's calming are the barn sparrows and doves quietly having a conversation while an intruder (that would be me!) makes strange stroking motions on an easel and board.
This barn was built in the 1700's, when slaves worked the plantation's wheat, tobacco, corn and livestock.A dream-like glow seems to infuse the barn, much like the way I view the plantation.

This gorgeous, symmetrical barn is just down Buck Mountain Road in Earlysville, Virginia, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was irresistible, it had to be painted; and what I like about this oil is how free the brushstrokes became. The structure became a dreamlike symbol of it's history, and it's history is deep.
The Bleak House Plantation was built in the 1700's and covered hundreds of acres planted in corn, tobacco, wheat and other crops.

There are so many choices of painting styles - when you're in the market, it helps to quickly narrow down what appeals to your individual taste....(continued below)

Helpful purchasing guidelines:
1. What's your budget? You can purchase original pieces of art - art that will increase in value - for less than $500.
2. When looking at art samples, what draws your eye first? This includes identifying that eye-grabbing trait: A color or colors? Subject matter, pattern, abstraction? The stroke (or lack of) of the artist's hand?
3. What size? This seems obvious, but are you open to whatever appeals? Or are you trying to fill a big space over the sofa?
