It was a hike through the Botanical Gardens in Asheville to get down to this stream. It was so worth the effort, however - look at those reflections! and those shadows! Exquisite. I wouldn't have thought this would happen, but once other hikers saw us, they too clamoured down the banks to talk and watch. Sometimes that's annoying, but this day was so perfect; so peaceful - that I welcomed their happy presence and delighted in their kind support. "Waterlily Hearts" by Catherine Twomey
"Waterlily Hearts" is a waterlily watercolor, about 10" X 15" on Crescent board. Painted at the Biltmore Estate, I was as fascinated with the delicacy of the design as I was the colors.
"Upper Falls Early Spring" by Catherine Twomey; Available!
North Carolina/Tennessee border. Imagine sitting for hours along the banks of a somewhat hidden creek. There are fishermen there, friendly and pulling trout out of the clean, clean water. The bugs aren't out yet because it's early spring; it's a bit cool in the morning but warming as the sun ascends. You're soothed by the literally babbling brook while completely absorbed by the task at hand. A most glorious day. Sometimes the shapes are as mesmerizing as the sound of the water! Watercolor, gouache, Arches paper, about 8" X 10".

"Roots, Trees Rocks" Watercolor by Catherine Twomey
Painted live on site at the Lamar Alexander State Park in Tennessee. This was painted alongside a raging brook full of trout. A most soothing atmosphere and beautiful scene.
"California SLO Oceanscape" by Catherine Twomey
Plein air of the California cliffs near San Luis Obispo; watercolor. Thank you to the purchaser who told me this reminds them of their days spent camping along Highway 1.
"Tropics of the Pool" by C. Twomey
Acrylic, 12 X 16” on archival oil paper.
I spent a day painting this gorgeous pool on Anna Marie Island, Florida. It was too windy for the beach, so somehow I became engrossed with the water and shapes of the pool. It was mysteriously surrounded by plantings many of which were in the shade. It was quiet and mesmerizing to watch the waves and colors change.
A Rose For Your Thoughts...
Haven’t been able to paint much after having foot surgery July 30th. Third surgery on my left leg, and hopefully the last. I inherited some wayward bones that had to be put back in their place. All went well and hopefully going to get back into the swing of things soon.
Note: I have an added respect for people who have to use walkers to get around.
Best,
Catherine

Sold: "Point Reyes, Ca, Drakes Beach Estuary, Midday Tide" C. Twomey Watercolor
Thanks very much to collector of this watercolor plein air painting. This is the Point Reyes, CA estuary, a most beautiful place full of birds, sea lions and peace. This was my first trip to the astounding Point Reyes National Seashore preserve, about 1.5 hours north of San Francisco. I hiked all over the area, and painted this sitting on a hill looking towards the cliffs, watching as the midday tide began to waft in. The gulls and seals were talking to me for the several hours while I painted.

Yosemite Merced River Wild
Yosemite Merced River Wild |
This was the year of overflow snow and subsequent water in Yosemite, when over 14 people lost their lives trying to cross the river and falls like this one. Bear was in the air.
