"When The Sun Blinds Your Eyes" by C. Twomey

I climbed the rough trail to the bald, or open area, of Max Patch. If you've heard of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail (A.T.) then maybe you've been there. Deep in the Pisgah National Forest, it's a pretty easy climb to the bald - and there you'll find a spectacular 360 degree view of the Great Smoky Mountains, the Black Mountains and the flatland of eastern Tennessee.

Indeed, it feels like you're touching the sky; the clouds; even the air. I watched storms move across the valleys and hollows, constantly wondering if they were about to turn our way and cause a rapid descent. On any given day, there might be a number of other hikers there, but the atmosphere is respectful and peaceful. It's lovely to just lay on your back in the grass and watch the world move.

Mars Attacks!

Some more experimentation today, while moving towards the planets and considering the Hubble Telescope images. What a beautiful planet - and so mysterious.

Took a break from my contemporary realism painting retreat to create this Manifesto Series piece. “The Edge of the Earth” is just that; a commentary on whether we are on the earth’s edge, or not. I plan to finish this up when I get home soon.

Recently finished this piece looking down towards Asheville from the eastern mountains. A stunning evening as the lights popped out. 12X16’ on Canson canvas board.

Be Safe; What Has Florence Wrought?

Unfortunately the fate of these two pieces is unknown. My gallery opening was to be Friday, Sept. 14 in New Bern, North Carolina. This town was severely impacted by Hurricane Florence, as was, I’m pretty sure, the gallery, which was downtown. Here’s hoping for the best for the residents and my fellow artists! And if you see them floating by, please give me a ring…..

"Grandfather Mountain Adoration" Work Completed!

There is something so satisfying about working with someone who has commissioned your work. The gift of having their trust to complete a vision is priceless. This work began with a trip up the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Grandfather Mountain area. I hiked extensively, capturing reference photos and a good sense of what the mountain was about.  Just this morning, the commissioner commented: 

It’s beautiful and we love it! It’s going to look great in our living room.
Thank you so much. 

Grateful, thrilled and touched by the whole process.

"The Gulf, Sarasota With Sunset" by C. Twomey, Work In Progress

Sunsets are irresistible. There's something about the ritual of gathering along the sea as the first hints of the day's end appear. Every second, every minute and the sky comes alive. The colors deepen, the reflections suggest watercolors and sterling silver and transitions.

This is an original acrylic pour combined with handpainting. It is 12 X 12" and ready to hang.

"Grandfather Mountain Adoration" Work In Progress by Twomey

Back to work after being at a meeting in Boston, I've started on the first layers of the distant mountains. So enjoyable to work on this with music playing and thoughts of the trails. I will probably soften the transitions between shapes a bit, but hard to judge that until all the layers are finished.

Fireflies: Study of fireflies in June

The fireflies migrate to the tops of the oaks after about 9:00 pm. I wish I knew what they were planning. It's been humid, hot and the days filled with downpours, one after the other. Maybe they're trying to escape the earth? 4X6" on archival canvas board.

Work In Progress: Electric Storm Approaching

WIP Work In Progress- that moment when you sense a nasty storm about to reach you, but you have no intention of moving. Silver infused 12”x12” acrylics.

Blue Ridge Swirl

Working on a new series, this piece was influenced by the Blue Ridge Mountains around Asheville NC. The acrylic pour technique is challenging but very interesting to see what will happen with the colors.
